Did you know there are many fish that were named after other animals?
Here are the top 6 fish named after their similarity to land creatures.
Number 1: Catfish
The name Catfish was derived from their prominent barbels which resemble a cat’s whiskers.
They grow to as large as 8.2ft in length.
Number 2: Wolffish
These monstrous creatures are named because of their ferocity preying on hard-shelled invertebrates such as clams,
crushing with their strong canine and molar teeth.
Number 3: Frogfish
The frogfish are experts at the art of mimicry;
making themselves look like a rock or blob of seaweed to catch their prey.
Number 4: Seahorse
Their genus name Hippocampus comes from the Greek for “horse” and “sea monster.”
The Hippocampi were figures in Greek mythology, half horse and half fish.
Number 5: Lionfish
Don’t be fooled by it magnificent flashy colours, this fish has venomous spiky fin rays which makes them excellent predators.
Number 6: Batfish
These squashed-looking critters have modified pelvic fin to walk along the seafloor.
Batfish is thought to secrete an odor to lure its prey to within striking range.
